The Tall Poppy Campaign was created in 1998 by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) to recognise and celebrate Australian intellectual and scientific excellence and to encourage younger Australians to follow in the footsteps of our outstanding achievers.

The objectives of the Campaign are to:

  • Engage the Australian public in celebrating Australian scientific excellence and recognising its relevance to public policy issues.
  • Foster an Australian culture which celebrates high achievers rather than ‘cutting them down’. Inspiring younger Australians about the possibilities of science.
  • Encourage younger Australians to take up tertiary study and careers in the sciences. Improve the scientific literacy of the Australian public.

The Young Tall Poppy Science Awards aim to recognise the achievements of Australia’s outstanding young scientific researchers and communicators.

Nominations in 2018 open on the 26th of February and close on April 9th.

Selection criteria include outstanding research / academic achievement as well as excellence in communication and community engagement to promote an understanding of science.

Over 500 Young Tall Poppy Science Awards had been made around Australia and Awards programs are currently in place in every Australian state and territory.

The Award winners (‘Tall Poppies’) participate in education and community outreach programs in which they become role models to inspire school students and the broader community about the possibilities of science. This involves a range of other science promotion activities for school students, teachers and the broader community, including visits to schools, educational seminars, workshops, public talks and other activities.
