Respectful Communities at Monash University invite you to participate in our Active Bystander workshop.

In this 90-minute virtual workshop you will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • An understanding of ‘Active bystander’ behaviour in the context of problem behaviours within the workplace.
  • The expectations of staff in promoting a respectful culture and intervening in problematic behaviours, comments and attitudes.
  • The role staff can play in prevention (including capacity and limits of intervention).
  • Knowing the support mechanisms available to the active bystander and those targeted.
  • Confidence in applying the Bystander Framework and Active Bystander strategies when choosing to intervene.
  • Knowledge of how to encounter resistance to intervention to achieve the desired outcome.

Facilitator: Renee Heckman, Senior Trainer, Respectful CommunitiesMonash University

Ms Renee Heckman (she/her) is the Senior Trainer at Monash University’s Respectful Communities. Renee has a BA and Honours degree in Public Health and Health Promotion. Her work and volunteer experience span many service sectors including sexual health, academic research, women’s health, gender equality within the workplace and tertiary education teaching. As a Senior Trainer at Respectful Communities, Renee’s ultimate goal is to assist staff and students in realising the role they can play at Monash and within their communities in promoting and enhancing an equal, safe and inclusive environment for all.
