William Phillips
On 20 May 2019, World Metrology Day, the international metrology community adopted revolutionary changes to the International System of Units (the SI, or Metric System) wherein all of the base units of measure are defined by fixing the values of constants of nature. The SI is now firmly based on quantum methods of measurement. This talk will discuss why we needed such a reform and how we achieved it.

PI Prof William D. Phillips is one of the pioneers in the field of ultracold atoms. His research has developed the field of laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms, ultracold collisions of atoms, atoms in optical lattices as condensed matter analogs, matterwave optics, non-linear dynamics with atoms, superfluidity of atomic gases, synthetic magnet fields for neutral atoms and atomtronics.
