Neutron reflectometry using polarised cold neutrons to probe quantum heterostructures

Cold neutrons can be spin-polarised and reflected from interfaces. This technique can be used to reveal the magnetic profile of ultra-thin films (<3 nm thick) and 2D materials, revealing insights into magnetic proximity effects and superconducting penetration depths. Here I will review some recent applications of the polarized PLATYPUS reflectometer at ANSTO, and present the current international trends [1-3]. I will present a new Python library that allows for the solution of the 1D Schrodinger equation, necessary to model polarized neutron reflectometry data.

David Cortie is a Scientific Research Associate based at both the University of Wollongong and ANSTO. Collaborating with CI Xiaolin Wang, he performs density functional theory calculations with the goal of discovering new candidate topological Dirac semimetals, as part of FLEET’s Research Theme 1, Topological Materials.
