The 2022 FLEET Strategic Workshop will be in a hybrid format, in person at the Swanston Academic Building, Room 17, level 10, building 80 RMIT University and live-streamed for remote attendees. We will discuss FLEET legacy and review the Centre’s research milestones and strategic plan. The 3-day workshop program from 5-7 December 2022 will include:
- Day 1, 10:30AM – 5PM Monday 5 December: legacy and governance discussions. All investigators are invited to participate in the legacy discussion and in-person attendance is highly encouraged!
- Day 2, 9AM – 9PM Tuesday 6 December: review of Theme 1AB research milestones, followed by the FLEET End-of-year function at Holey Moley mini golf, Melbourne CBD
- Day 3, 9AM – 5PM Wednesday 7 December: review of Theme 2 & 3 research milestones

Students and ECRs Workshop
Proudly brought to you by the FLEET ECR committee, there will also be a training and writing retreat happening concurrently with the strategic meeting, on the same floor. The ECR Workshop will be in a hybrid format, in person in Rooms 13-15, level 10, building 80 RMIT University and live-streamed for remote attendees. The 3-day workshop program from 5-7 December 2022 will include:
- Day 1, 10:30AM – 5PM Monday 5 December:
- Training workshops on –
- Presenting your research: “Show me what you got! Creating great figures and presentations”, aims to help researchers better create figures and presentations that are engaging, clear and concise, and publication worthy.
- Job hunting: “Working 9 to 5: Job applications (both industry and academia), CV prep, and networking”, aims to create CVs suitable for relevant roles and gain an understanding of how to best apply for jobs in relevant fields, both in and outside of academia.
- Media & Comms: “Talk science to me: let’s promote research”, aims to teach researchers how to promote their research, cutting out the middleman (PR and comms coordinators, aka Errol).
- Practice presentations – running parallel to the above workshop in a breakout room, where you can improve your presentation skills by practising in front of an audience and well-experienced FLEET colleagues.
- Training workshops on –
- Day 1, after 5PM Monday 5 December: social activities at QV strike bowling, escape room or laser tag. Please indicate your preference in the registration form.
- Day 2, 9AM – 5PM Tuesday 6 December: drop-in writing retreat
- Day 2, 6PM – 9PM Tuesday 6 December: FLEET end-of-year function at Holey Moley mini golf, Melbourne CBD
- Day 3, 9AM – 5PM Wednesday 7 December: drop-in writing retreat
These drop-in writing retreats are sessions that will be run in a quiet space in 4 main blocks of 90 minutes on Tuesday and Wednesday to allow you to work on papers, grants, data, theses, etc…
In addition, there will also be a separate breakout room for networking and other work-life balance/health and well-being-related activities for you to take advantage of over the week.
All ECRs are invited to participate in the above-mentioned activities as well as other social events planned after hours.
A COVID-safe event
- Please use hand sanitisers upon entering the building and before eating/drinking
- A face mask is highly recommended indoors and outdoors if you cannot maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres
- Hand sanitisers and antibacterial wipes are available at the venue
- Please stay home if you are unwell or displaying any symptoms, and get tested immediately
- We are live-streaming the event so you won’t miss a thing

For those choosing to drive, there are a limited number of car parks and street parking options available at your own expense.
The workshop venue is very close to the Melbourne free tram zone, look for signage at tram stops to identify boundaries.

Onsite creche
We strongly encourage the participation of all members at the workshop, please consider the FLEET carers’ grant to enable you to attend in person.
