inSTEM

Connect with other scientists from marginalised or underrepresented groups. Develop your professional networks, build your networking skills, and learn strategies supporting personal career development. Discuss strategies to improve Australia’s scientific diversity: increasing access, retention and success for diverse groups.

The inSTEM networking and career-development conference (20-21 July) in Brisbane will bring together people from many marginalised or underrepresented groups in STEM, and their allies.

Attendance is free for FLEET members. See event listing.

Organised and sponsored by ten ARC Centres of Excellence, the conference at the University of Queensland will offer attendees a safe space to meet, make connections and build relationships with other researchers and research scholars. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from leading experts on topics and strategies that support career development and progression.

“Networking is a key strategy for career progression, yet numerous studies have shown that women’s networks are less powerful than men’s and that women seem to be less equipped to leverage the networks they do have when it comes to their career. Further research has found that this is not an issue specific to women but is indicative of the experiences of marginalised groups in general.” –inSTEM

We will also discuss how to create change that improves access, supports retention and champions success in STEM for individuals from marginalised or underrepresented groups.

Who is this for? Developed with higher degree research students and postdoctoral researchers in STEM, the event is also for researchers from underrepresented or marginalised groups in STEM and their allies.  This might include individuals from any of the following groups, or allies of individuals from any of the following groups:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
  • People of colour
  • People who identify as LGBTQIA+
  • Women
  • People from gender minorities
  • People living with a disability*
  • People who care for a person with a disability or who have other caring responsibilities
  • People from a refugee background or low socio-economic background
  • People who have experienced domestic violence

*Disability includes, sensory, intellectual, neuro-diverse, physical and mental illness, where disability is permanent or is likely to be permanent.

What will I get out of this event? This conference is designed to provide attendees with training and knowledge on a range of topics that will support the development of your career. It will also provide in-person attendees with the opportunity to put their networking skills in to practice with other attendees during breaks and at the social function.  The inSTEM conference program can be found on the inSTEM website – www.instem.io. On Day 2 of the conference, we will also hear from a range of experts or individuals with lived experience, who will share their knowledge and perspectives about how we ensure we are creating and supporting a more diverse and inclusive workforce for all underrepresented and marginalised groups in STEM.

In-person Participate in the live event and access all of the recorded presentations following the event, so you can go back and watch any sessions you missed. Coffee on arrival, morning tea and lunch. You will also have the option of attending the networking social function on the Wednesday evening 5–7pm, which includes food, beverages, and entertainment.  You will see a tote bag on registration with some conference goodies!
