Cathy Foley recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Dr Cathy Foley AO, CSIRO Chief Scientist

CSIRO Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley was recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours for her distinguished service to research science, to the advancement of women in physics and to professional scientific organisations.

Prior to becoming Chief Scientist, as Deputy and Science Director of CSIRO Manufacturing, Dr Foley worked to engage Australian manufacturers and researchers to translate research into economic prosperity. Her contributions to the understanding of superconducting electronics and devices were recognised with the 2014 International IEEE Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions to Applied Superconductivity.

She is Chair of the Australian National Fabrication Facility Victorian Node Collaboration Committee and the ARC Steel Hub Advisory Committee. She was awarded the Clunies Ross Medal of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering in 2015 and the Australian Institute of Physics’ Outstanding Service to Physics Award in 2016.

Last month Dr Foley was named as a new Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, recognising her significant contributions to physics (high-temperature superconductors, and to the development of field-deployable superconducting devices that locate valuable mineral deposits) and to science more generally through promoting and supporting science across the wider community.

FLEET is very fortunate to have the benefit of Dr Foley’s advice on the Centre’s Advisory Committee.
